What to Expect at a Beginner Taxidermy Class at Bones & Hide Preservation

If you've ever been curious about taxidermy but weren't sure where to start — or weren't sure if it was "for you" — this post is for you.

At Bones & Hide, I offer hands-on beginner taxidermy classes right here in my studio. My goal is simple: make taxidermy approachable, educational, and genuinely fun — no experience required.

Who are these classes for?

Honestly? Everyone. I've had artists, nature lovers, curious teenagers, and complete beginners walk through my door. You don't need any prior experience with taxidermy, anatomy, or art. All you need is an open mind and a willingness to try something new.

What will you actually do?

Depending on the class, you'll work hands-on with a real specimen — learning the process of skinning, cleaning, positioning, and preserving. I walk you through every step, so you're never left guessing. You'll leave with a finished piece you made yourself, or a future pick-up date if you have add-ons.

Is it... gross?

I get this question a lot! Honestly, it can feel unfamiliar at first, but most students find it fascinating rather than unsettling once they get started. I create a comfortable, respectful environment and we take things at your pace. Should you realize the yuck is too much, just let me know and I can take over. Not all classes have the mess. There are No Mess Classes available.

What should I bring?

Just yourself for a short class, and a lunch if a longer class! All tools, materials, and supplies are provided. I recommend wearing clothes you don't mind getting a little messy, and closed-toe shoes are required. (Rubber Boots on Skinning Days)

How long is the class?

Classes typically run 2–47hours depending on the project. Check the current schedule on my Classes page for specific timings.

How do I book?

Head to my Home Page to see my current scheduled classes, or my Classes page to see all other options currently available. Spaces are limited and fill up fast, so book early!
